The composition of Au Bord de la Mer (At the Seaside) is derived from Japanese sources popular with French artists at the time. While there is an intended nautical quality to the painting, it is in fact a window in the artist's home. James Tissot is a celebrated artist who is represented in every major museum collection of 19th century art. In addition to his highly detailed and fashionable paintings, he was among the greatest etchers of his day.
