Zellige is the arabic word for ceramic tile, and a key feature of Moroccan architecture and ornament. The art form has origins in the Middle East and ancient Mediterranean, where geometric tilework can be used to decorate any number of surfaces, from walls and floors to fountains and pools. Historically, the in-lay technique has been transfered from one generation to the next by the skilled artisans. This object is a remarkable testament to the ongoing legacy of Zellige production in the North of Africa. Acquired from devoted scholar and connoisseur of ceramic tiles.
